Study framing
This study explores Turkey's economy across major political and macroeconomic periods, using indicators such as inflation, exchange rates, GDP growth, trade, debt, inequality, and poverty.
The focus eras span the 1980s liberalization under Özal, the 1990s coalition-era instability that culminated in the 2001 banking crisis, the AKP era of growth and disinflation under Erdoğan, and the post-2018 currency and inflation stress. The 2005 lira redenomination is marked as an event, not as a separate era.
The goal is not to claim that one political period or event caused a specific outcome, but to compare how different signals moved over time.
Event overlays and shaded periods are context markers only. They help the reader ask better questions, not prove causality.
Key patterns to look for
- Inflation is high during the Özal-era liberalization and the 1990s coalition years, falls under AKP-era disinflation in the early 2000s, and rises sharply again after 2018.
- The Turkish lira depreciation is easier to read on a log scale because proportional moves are more comparable across decades; the 2005 redenomination is a units change, not a regime break.
- The 2001 banking crisis and the 2018 / 2021 FX shocks are useful timing anchors when reading inflation, FX, current account, and external debt together as external-vulnerability signals.
- Poverty falls strongly in available observations, while inequality tends to move more gradually.

Minimal map style by design: this layer is built for lightweight context and future overlays (regional indicators, elections, migration, trade routes, climate, and travel/photo notes).
Turkey economy study
Focus periods are approximate political/economic eras used for comparison, not strict causal labels.
Özal (1983-1993) · Coalition era (1993-2002) · Erdoğan I (2003-2013) · Erdoğan II (2013-2018) · Erdoğan III (2018-present) · 1980 transition (1980-1983, optional)
Policy-rate panel is hidden for now: source indicator FR.INR.LEND currently has no Turkey observations in this selected range.
Overlays are contextual markers only and do not imply causality.
Focus presets outside the selected range are disabled; up to three selected periods are shaded with the first shown as primary.
